Greek hoplites and phalanxes
A hoplon was a shield. They were very heavy (17-33 pounds), bronze-covered, and 3 to 3.5 feet in diameter. Hoplites were what Greek warriors were called and they were actually named from hoplon. When Greek warriors overlapped their shields, forming a shield wall, every hoplite has their left part of the shield protecting every right side of the hoplite to the left. A phalanx is a bunch of hoplites with spears in rows protecting each other and spearing their enemies. The back rows protect and guard the front rows from backing up so that the front rows can stab their opponents. Phalanxes could have up to 50 rows and 4. 8. 16 or more men deep.
Greek warriors armor
The main way to get hoplite armor was if it was passed down through families because it was super expensive. A shield and maybe a secondary weapon or a helmet was all the peasant hoplites had. The most common type of armor giving okay protection and a decent price was linorthorax armor. The rich hoplites, however, got to wear a bronze breastplate, a bronze helmet, and greaves which protected their shins.
Greek warriors weapons
Hoplites have 7-9 feet long spears for weapons. Greek warriors have their shields on their left side, and their spears on the right. If the spears snapped or lost while fighting, ancient Greek warrios also carries a short sword as a secondary weapon.
